With my specific wants, I was looking for a low-mileage 1997 or 1998 manual Spa Yellow Pearl NSX which limited me to a total of about 30 cars. (I was originally looking for Formula Red until I went to a car show in Dallas with my brother, Jason, that featured a Yellow one which took my breath away.) I had come close to about two cars before, one in Northern California, and another in Dallas that I was willing to fly there, purchase the car, and drive it back here to Phoenix. However, one car was sold very quickly and the other, the owner decided not to sell it, which I could completely understand.
Then April 26th, 2005, happened... I was joking with a friend and pointed him to NSX's on eBay and what's this? A 1999 Yellow NSX right here in Phoenix!! I made an appointment to inspect the car the next day and made an offer on the spot. The car was in immaculate condition with polished brake rotors and an amazingly clean undercarriage. It's a bit newer and has a supercharger and other racing modifications with over 400hp that were outside of my specifications, but the lack of sales tax on personal car sales in AZ made up the difference!
Long story short - I finally own my dream car and have a permanent smile on my face. :) I tell people the window tinting is to prevent me from blinding other drivers with my smile. :)
Following is text gleaned from various sources, but if you want to skip to more pictures, they're further below. :)
Well-balanced, perfectly poised, easy to drive, powerful, graceful... the NSX is a precision instrument that is forgiving enough to make a driver of any skill level feel like a pro. The 3.2-liter engine cranks out 290 stock horsepower and well over 400 horsepower with the current modifications and upgrades propelling the car down the road at with exhilarating speed and mind boggling performance. No sports car handles so well as this dream ride. The mid-engine design provides excellent weight distribution, keeping the wheels securely planted around the most aggressive of turns. Braking is also an NSX strong point, at 122 feet from 60 to zero.
Inside, the NSX is as comfortable to drive as the Honda Accord. All controls are logically placed, the seating position is nothing short of perfect, the targa top is easily stored and visibility is better than any other sports car in the world.
The 3.2 engine is a masterpiece. It uses Honda's variable valve timing to provide good low-speed pulling power as well at top-end horsepower. It uses an electro hydraulic system to change the cam lobe profiles and the change-over happens at 5800 RPM. The cylinder liners are installed using a special thin carbon-fiber/aluminum silica material lining for thinner walls and better cooling. Many other systems that were developed through Honda's racing program here in the U.S. and in Europe have been utilized on the NSX. The engine construction is all-aluminum helping achieve an incredible gross weight of just 3300 pounds. The weight bias is a bit towards the rear and to compensate, the rear tires are slightly bigger than the fronts. The rear disc brakes are larger as well.
Every NSX is hand-built in Tochigi, Japan. There's no production line and each chassis is rolled along on a dolly from station to station. If a particular car needs more time to "make it right," it stays where it is until that particular team gives its stamp of approval. In contrast, the engine assembly is not a team effort. A single technician is responsible for the power plant assembly. This liability ensures that the engine isn't installed until it is perfect. And unlike production line cars, each NSX is given a proving-grounds road test of up to 50 miles just to make sure that it's up to snuff. This car is stunningly finished in none other than gleaming SPA YELLOW PEARL with color matched calipers and detailed rotors, finished off with a set of beautiful chrome plated factory wheels.
